Manifesto

My art is what I do

It’s passing the time on commute

It’s the twists in my hair when class got boring

It looks like Saturdays with my students

sewing twin fairy costumes at the last minute with my mom

It’s purpose is to hide from people and monsters and all the things I hate, yet still be part of the world

And tell stories that can’t be told just with words

Making is like nearness to God

My art is about everyday life

Race, systemic oppression, the funny conversation I had with my sister

Its very black and gets “slightly” militant at times

It’s to remind people what it means to have empathy

For someone who feels varying levels of “oppressed” everyday

I’m learning the balance between brutal honesty and a kindly tongue [being tactful]

My art is somewhat communal

It’s how I express my thoughts when I don’t know how to communicate

It’s to be presented, commented on, shared, collaborated on and gifted

It may not be in a gallery or displayed on a wall, but if someone looks over my shoulder, Sees a sketch of mine and says

“that’s pretty cool.”

I’ve done my job
